The Importance of Program Accreditation and Review

Review are what keeps standards stringent. On September 28, 2017, CBC news reported that a College of the North Atlantic program was under review for not meeting all of the accreditation standards. This was a matter of safety as several safety measures were found not to be in place for the medical radiography program. The review and report provided clear expectations that needed to be met to regain accreditation.

They were in this instance:

“complete its safety manual, hire a certified radiation safety officer, provide a schedule of preventive maintenance "to ensure equipment meets output and safety regulations," and show evidence that "risks of unintentional radiation exposure have been eliminated."

Reviews, reports, and program compliance are important because they affect:

1. Public safety - without standards and review protocols, there would be wide diversity in suitability and safety depending on one's training.

2. Program confidence - thanks to reviews like this one, the public (both students and consumers) are protected

3. Industry standards - review provides motivation to keep improving and stay aligned with industry best practices

4. Job market clarity - hiring can be done confidently when you are not doubting the competence of the candidates before you

5. A clear path to making things right - when a program does not meet its review requirements, the resulting report spells out how to bring things back into alignment and gain re-accreditation.
