Learning without the stress of Effort: the State of Flow

Flow, the concept popularized by the work of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi (you can read more about it here) is the state in which we are so engaged in our work, it feels natural like we're in the zone and time passes without our notice.

Here are 4 ways you can introduce your class to the state of flow:

1. Explain flow and have them journal on a time when they have experienced flow in the past, even if they didn't know what it was at the time.

2. Introduce hands on work or a problem to solve.

3. Employ groupwork. Connecting with other students and concepts engages the learner and makes time fly by.

4. Assign an interesting read.

As a writer, this is a favourite state of mine. Instructor Don Bell does a great job sharing more about this phenomenon and its application in the classroom. You can find his digital project on the subject here.

Here are my notes on the project:

It is an awesome powtoon. I liked the background, characters, transitions, and music.

In a couple of the earlier slides, the font was a little small for reading. The ideal viewing experience occured at the "3 conditions necessary" slide.

I really liked the partnering up of the sad character with the negatives of this approach -- very effective.

The references slide would be easier to read on a plain backdrop.

Great example -- very inspiring
